Mode Calgary's Jessie Gwynne came through Edmonton a little while back.

We shot on location in the Old Strathcona area on a day that reached 33 degrees, and an evening that left us fairly eaten by mosquito's. Things are immune to repelent. Team of troopers and we shot some fun stuff:

Right before they left on a cross-Canada tour (which I hear went well!), amazing local Edmonton band Ghost Cousin commissioned me to do some promo shots for them.

It was a fun shoot, and great to do something a little different. They shot the shit and I shot some shots. Am pleased with what we got. They wanted something natural and decided on shooting in a friends apartment.

These guys are good, and genuine in what they're doing. They're actually playing a show with some other bands (who I've yet to hear, but am sure will be wonderful) at Wunderbar tonight and if it's your thing, you should certainly come along.

Behind the scenes: The Laura Shoot

SO, I've only just realized I start all my blog past with "So...". SO this shall be the last time, need to vary it up. Sorry to start with a side note, I'm sure I was the only one aware anyway.

Onto the point:

Not too long ago I got together with my usual team beauty team (the lovely Felicity Crocker @ Blunt and the wicked cool Calyn Johnson @ Painted Lady), and worked with wardrobe stylist Erin Monaghan for the first time (she may have snapped your outfit for the Edmonton Vestiary)

Friend, model, and all around awesome lady Laura Ritchie modeled for us. Erin pulled MAINLY from her closet which is stocked with amazing vintage finds and luxurious modern staples (let's just say I'm jealous...). We shot in her (also enviable) downtown apartment building and made some magic.

Throughout the day we found ourselves calling it "the Laura shoot" as in some of the scenes/looks it emulated a lot of her actual character.
Though in some we made her seem a little....immoderate? Not necessarily her day to day self.

I was going to post a preview shot, but I couldn't simply choose a SINGLE image out of the lot to edit, and really feel like they need to be seen as a collective. So here are just some sneaky peeks.

The Group Sound

So there's this band. They're called the group sound.
They recently put out they're first album and, personally, I think you should buy the cassette.
It's only five bucks and my delightful face is on the cover of it...which makes the sweet surfer beats totally worth it.

In all seriousness though they made some damn catchy tunes. I also got some photos of the group outside their last show at The Wunderbar which I'll be throwing up once I develop them.

So Genevieve (a talented Montreal based designer) came back through Edmonton a little while back and had me do some shots of her designs for her Black Mold collection.
Genevieve does some very unique and beautiful pieces and gorgeous bags, I was happy to be on board.

So you can tell I've been busy when I only now am blogging the preview post of my shoot on Sunday the 13th!

Just as a little bonus for all my blog readers, these gentlemen who live in the house just over from my building (viewable via my balcony) decided that at 3 or so degrees, it was a good idea to grace all passers by with their spedo clad presence. One wielding an axe for no apparent reason, one using his spedo as a holster for his knuckle buster. They were out on their lawn for a good few hours drinking beer and blasting metal.

Made for some great entertainment in our day!

Frustration.

So I haven't actually written anything for a while, or posted many pictures...

In all honesty, my cameras and I haven't been too friendly with each other of late.

I moved into a new apartment over the weekend. Am now proud to say I live just a block off Whyte, which will make things immensely easier.

Other than that, I've hit a motivational slump. Any shoot ideas I've had have been far too fussy, at least in my mind. The idea of coordinating a team, locations, all that delightful, stressful stuff has been bursting the idea bulbs above my head, and I've opted to simply not.

I miss natural light, unfussy, fun affairs.

This, I have decided, is unacceptable. So today I revisited my first (more serious) form of photographic play and, once again, turned my camera on myself for some self-portraits.

It was simple. I was here, I had some things to toy with, and I had all the time I needed.

A while back I was gifted a super nifty, super 8 camera, with projector, projection screen, and all (thanks lovely boyfriend!). Though I haven't had time or funding to get the batteries and film sorted, I decided to get the projector and screen out today and play with just the light of it.

Simple, fun.

They aren't amazing, but they're something, right?

I need to start taking some shoots less seriously and let myself remember how much I love simply creating an image...even if it is just me playing the character I have in mind.

So I've decided to start a secondary blog.

I shoot A LOT of film, and I often feel it's only for my own sake. Each film camera I own has taught me something new of photography. Lately though people have been making me aware that it is appreciated. The lovely Jessica Kennedy asked for a print of one of my holga images.

I received an anonymous email of appreciation

Things of that nature.

Yet I still don't feel it worth entire blog posts here, nor feel it's worth using on my website. So as a way to share it with those who aren't simply facebook friends, I've started Sees She In Film.

Having my arm busted made me entirely restless. Not being able to shoot in that time was a frustration, but it gave me time to plan the wonderfully fun happening that was The Hermit shoot.

The shoot was yesterday, and despite my being frazzled throughout, came together pretty much perfectly. Jill styled, Calyn covered makeup, Aoife was the model, and Jacqueline kept me in order as creative director!

We shot on location at the H.V Shaw Building in Downtown Edmonton (built as a cigar factory in 1914), and it worked wonderfully for the concept. Interesting location.

I know my posts have been a little lacking lately, but I've had my wrist healing and since then have been planning a somewhat elaborate shoot.

I approached the lovely Miss Ohm about concerns and frustrations regarding my "inability" to get things together by myself to execute my overwhelming amount of shoot ideas.

She took on the role of Creative Director, and Missy doesn't fail me. She took me location scouting recently and brought me to the perfect space for the main idea in mind. It was an interesting adventure all throughout downtown Edmonton (some silly pictures to follow).

The wonderful, bright haired, Jill Jerat has agreed to style the shoot, and I can't wait to see the concept translate into clothing.

It's all coming together at the moment. Stressful but exciting.

My first camera

Remember I-zone cameras? That fad? The Polaroid cameras with four basic settings that printed out stamp sized pictures with colourful borders?
I was nine years old when I got one and it was the first camera I owned.

My mother sent along some of my things from Hong Kong recently and among them were a collection of some of my I-zone photographs. It's exciting to see them. To see what my nine year old self found photo worthy (it's mainly people, nothing changed there).

I've scanned them all in, and though I'm sure it excites me far more than it will anyone else, I wanted to share some.

Energetic Action

I followed Kristena along to photograph Energetic Action play. Was a great show that I spent sucked into the view finder.

Fun with bulb, blur, and much red backlight.

First attempt at band photography. Was mighty fun and am fairly pleased with the results. Am also pleased as it proves I'm physically able to shoot now!

My wrist is mended enough.

I've been going stir crazy waiting, so now some fashion/beauty shoots are on the way.

So, as I mentioned a few entries back, I bought a Polaroid Land Camera from 1975, I managed to get some compatible Fuji Film...It's been far harder figuring out the use than I thought it would be. Focus, colour balance, and all has been a great confusion. I'm starting to understand how it all comes together, but my first endeavour with instant film (not including the ever popular I-Zone camera I took with me everywhere in grade 5) has been fairly fussy.

Here are some of the first. Sorry for the quality of scan.
This was my very first attempt. I actually don't mind it.

I also had a rollerblading accident lately. Fractured my elbow and broke my wrist, so shoots are out of the question for a little while, sadly. Time to get planning and editing!

I got together with the gorgeous Cassie recently for a shoot. It's the funnest when there's no one to please but ourselves. I played around with a few somewhat different lighting set ups than I've used before (some of which will be more evident when I upload more images).

This is the first so far. I have far too much fun with longer exposure.

We used some great Thomas pieces. Hand shredded tanks and tunics which I adore. Also some neat Biko and Toodlebunny jewellery. (Thank you Nokomis)

A little delight in Levi Dunford

A while back I got together with my good friend (and artist) Levi.
We had a little impulse photoshoot/portrait session. I played around with long exposures and we did pretty much what we felt like.
It's due time I posted some of the pictures.

Since then I've been spending a fair bit of time with him, have had the pleasure of being about as he creates, and of being introduced to some wonderful people. One of which is Edwin Tuts who's invited levi to be part of an upcoming show.

Michelle and I got together for a fairly casual shoots on Wednesday with assistance from Levi. We went downtown and got some great shots.

Tomorrow I'm going to have a fairly relaxed, on location shoot downtown with Michelle. I'm excited to shoot with her again.

I've been busy. So, so, so very busy with work, and shoots, and editing and all things of the like. Painting seems a thing of the past of late, not happy about that. I need a brush in my hands every so often!

I'm behind with my blogging and editing due to said business, so I'm going to try catch up.

Had a shoot today with Allison who's in town for Edmonton Fashion Week. Terrific jumping skills! Was a fun day, as usual. Many hair and makeup looks by the wonderful Bonnie Bentley.

Shot with Jacqueline yesterday and am utterly inspired. Her movement!

She's just an awesome individual too; a story and a half. I feel so lucky to have met her. We didn't stop speaking for a second (this left many interesting snaps mid sentence).

We worked it with some natural light, which (save the recent self-portraits) I hadn't done for a while. Was refreshing.

After 10 hours straight of editing studio lit photographs from different shoots, I wound up feeling a little stifled by it all. I decided to take some naturally lit self-portraits and NOT let myself edit them. I'm glad I did. I know I'm nearly "nude", but this is my blog...I figure I'm allowed to share what I want.

I need to get back to natural light a little. It seems I only ever do now and then these days...and rarely with anything but film. I have a shoot on friday and may try fit in some naturally lit shooting.

I thought this was great.

"Photographers. We’re strange, right? We can’t stop. We run when others walk. We work when others relax. We have no sense of weekends, holidays, time off, time on, or time in general, except as it relates to sunrise or set. When there’s a football game on TV, we aren’t looking always at the action on the field. We’re looking at the sidelines to see if any our buds are covering the game and how much of the long glass out there is black or white. We walk around like addled sumbitches, staring at strange stuff, hovering at the edge of human activity, aching to be accepted, dying for a moment, breathless in anticipation for that which mostly never happens. Curious behavior, at best. That’s putting it nicely. Most folks would just chalk it up to damn strange and tell their youngsters to stay away from us.

Maybe the word is hinky. We shake our heads, punch buttons on expensive cameras, eyeball perfect strangers, ask odd questions, and wait for light. What an odd thing to wait for. We also have restive, restless, roaming eyes. Eyes that don’t shut down. Eyes that often feel hemmed in or framed by a 35mm lens border, eyes that correspond to a 24-70, or a 200-400, depending on what they encounter. Eyes that curse the dumb conglomeration of plastic, brass and glass we place in front of them, asking that mix of pixels and wiring to be surrogate vision, supple as the real thing. Hah! We might as well ask a fucking toaster oven."

Impulse dye.

I impulse bought some home hair dye. Not usually my thing. Since I shaved my head it's remained fairly natural, but it needed a change.

I still had my setup from the shoot with Michelle so I snapped a few before, between, and after shots. I really shouldn't have such things at my disposal.

But behold my new hair!

Still needs a cut...don't think I'm unaware of this.

Ordered some more prints today. Tomorrow I'll be testing out another set up for a shoot on Saturday.

Someone recently said that I take "quiet" pictures.

I quietly disagreed.

Going over my film images, I've reconsidered my disagreement...

Have put a set up on my website, but I'm unsure if they should stay there.

I got my first set of prints today and have ordered business cards. Two steps closer to being seriously pro-pro? I think so.

The thought of 11x14 prints scared me to death. I'd never seen any of my images that large..had rarely seen any off a computer screen actually. They've turned out beautifully though and I have a new found reassurance in my ability to produce something print worthy.

Now some gleeful geeking via web cam.

I was testing my setup for the shoot tomorrow in my usual fashion (take picture with remote, run to camera, adjust light, repeat x20) and in walked a dancer!

Here are the first couple of shots. There are so many more, all gorgeous. Have always wanted to get some dance pictures, but demand Aly (I mean it) to do it again in full get up.

Some more stress

I've fallen asleep listening to french audio exercises two evenings in a row now..unintentionally, of course. Would be lovely if my subconscious has absorbed something.

Other than that I'm working through a world of stresses in regards to upcoming shoots. Will be doing some lighting tests tomorrow with new set ups. Have a test shoot with a model named Michelle on Wednesday and can't wait. This seems to have taken forever to find a good date for.

How many other 18 year old girls are out spending their money on sheets of plywood and faux fur to build photo sets?

All in the name of an image.

I've been having a hell of a time planning shoots lately. The main issue being coordinating models and makeup artists schedules. It often leaves me waiting for them to align. All these different wardrobes and concepts to consider have me feeling like I may have put a little too much on my plate when I decided I'd start shooting hard this month. Regardless, I think I'm doing fairly well in between the panicked bouts of "WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE?!".

I'm doing a beauty shoot in two hours with a model named Una.

Can't wait, really. All this photography talk without walk has left my shutter finger itching to snap away.

Here's hoping I do my best and it goes well.

I recently bought a Yashica mat 124g and just had the first roll developed. I've got mixed feelings about the result, but can't wait to get the hang of it. I'm sure it will prove to be wonderful.
